The Friends of Colonial Pemaquid
are pleased and proud to announce the availability of their new
critically-acclaimed DVD. Here are the liner notes:
There is evidence of early
human settlement throughout Maine's history-rich Pemaquid Peninsula,
but none so dramatic or concentrated as Colonial Pemaquid State
Historic Site. Encompassing as it does three superimposed English
forts and their accompanying villages, Colonial Pemaquid stands
witness to the courageous, independent and enterprising individuals
who came to this remote area in the early 1600's to carve out
a better life for themselves. An early interface between English,
French and Native American cultures, who engaged alternatively
in trade and conflict, the site was in most recent centuries
a prosperous farm. It was not until the late 1800's that the
historical significance of Colonial Pemaquid was realized and
promoted; serious archaeological investigation of the Site had
to wait until the mid-1900's.
Against a background of beautiful
coastal scenery, period music and explanatory diagrams, Colonial
Pemaquid's story is related in such a way that the viewer can
imagine life as a settler there. Inserted between chapters in
that story are living history demonstrations of cod processing
and muzzle loading, an explanation of the Colonial customs for
clay pipes as well as a walking tour of the site's archaeological
treasures. The result is a sensitive and comprehensive snapshot
in time that makes Colonial Pemaquid truly alive.
Running time: 38 minutes
